Program Information

The graduate division of the Department of English promotes advanced study of British and American literature and the English language. The Department offers courses leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy. Applicants for direct admission to the Ph.D. program must have completed a Master of Arts degree with a major in English or its equivalent.

The M.A. program is designed to teach scholarly techniques, to introduce students to the study of the English language, and to give them a broad knowledge of British and American literature. The Ph.D., building on the M.A., is a more specialized degree, with a major in one of the following areas of study:

  1.   The English Language.
  2.   English Literature from its beginnings to1485.
  3.   English Literature from 1485 to 1660 (including Milton).
  4.   English Literature from 1660 to 1789.
  5.   English Literature from 1789 to 1900.
  6.   American Literature to 1900.
  7.  American Literature from 1900 to the Present.
  8. British Literature from 1900 to the Present.
  9.   Critical Theory and Cultural Studies.
  10.   Rhetoric and Composition.
  11.   African American Literature.
  12.  Southern Literature.
