The Center for European Studies (CES) at Chapel Hill has four components:
A European Union Center of Excellence funded by the European Commission
A National Resource Center in West European Studies funded by the U.S. Dept. of Education
The EURO Major, an undergraduate degree program in Contemporary European Studies
The TransAtlantic Masters Program, a graduate program of study in European Union politics, policy, and society and transatlantic relations
European Union Center of Excellence
As a European Union Center of Excellence we organize programs and research around two broad themes: European integration and transatlantic relations. The Center has strong resources and expertise in these areas including faculty experts, research projects, and undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The EUCE at Chapel Hill serves as Network Coordinator for the eleven European Union Centers of Excellence in the United States. Click here for the EUCE Network website.
The Center is a major sponsor of innovative new research and publications on contemporary Europe and the European Union. Our research working groups to date have produced eleven published volumes and two original data sets. See the Research section for details on projects we will be supporting in this cycle. The Center is active in outreach programs with 6-12th grade and post secondary educators and with business and media organizations.
National Resource Center
As a National Resource Center, CES promotes the study of contemporary European languages, politics, economies, societies and cultures on our own campus, in North Carolina , and more widely in the nation. On campus we fund the development of new courses focused on contemporary Europe, offer the less commonly taught languages of Dutch and Modern Greek, fund faculty and graduate student research and language learning, and sponsor research working groups, speakers, and academic and teaching conferences. CES staff are deeply involved with the schools of North Carolina helping to develop the teaching of international studies and languages and enriching the curriculum with original materials for classroom use on Modern Europe through Art, the influence of Islam in Europe, using film in language classrooms, and on Francophone Identities.
EURO Major
For undergraduate students, the Center has launched a new BA in Contemporary European Studies (the EURO). EURO majors are required to have strong proficiency in a European language other than English, and are encouraged to further language proficiency by completing major coursework in Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) sections. A certificate in EU Studies from the EUCE is available for students who complete at least two of six courses in the North Carolina video-collaborative run in conjunction with neighboring North Carolina State University and UNC-Charlotte.
TransAtlantic Masters Program
CES is home to the unique TransAtlantic Masters Program (TAM) which is one of three programs run by the European American Universities Consortium, a group of six European universities (Sciences Po, Paris; Humboldt University and FU, Berlin; University of Siena, Italy; Carlos III, Madrid; Charles University, Prague; and University of Bath, UK), UNC-CH and the University of Washington, Seattle. CES collaborates with our university's professional schools and regularly sponsors a course in the Law School on topics in EU Law.
