Europe as a Trading Partner:
Agriculture

This brief will address the history of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in both the European Community (EC) and in the context of the international trade regime. The discussion will also highlight more broadly the special status of agriculture in international trade relations between the US and the EC, as well as between the West and the developing world. Recent developments in agricultural policy have a direct bearing on the potential for a successful conclusion of the current Doha Round of trade negotiations.

  • The Early CAP (1950s-1980s)
  • The Uruguay Round and the WTO (1980s-1990s)
  • The CAP Today: Adjusting to New National and International Priorities
  • The Future of the CAP: Towards a Post-2013 Structure
