Background and Objective

The European Union Center of North Carolina and North Carolina State University sponsor annual workshops on politics, markets and policy in Europe.

This year the focus will be on "eEurope". At a recent European Council meeting in Lisbon the member states of the European Union committed themselves to an ambitious "eEurope Action Plan" (see the PDF version of the Action Plan). This proposed course of action will determine the regulatory environment for business as Europe makes the transition to a technology and information-based economy.

The purpose of this year's workshop is to bring in experts to educate business, government and educational leaders about the implications of these new policies.

Workshop Program

The emphasis at each event is on lively, policy-relevant discussions. Among the issue areas to be addressed: the legal framework for electronic commerce, intellectual property rights, emoney, the distance selling of financial services, and jurisdiction and the enforcement of judgments. More generally there will be discussion of network and telecommunications deregulation and wireless standards setting.
