In a world where migrations of cultures and people are increasing,
making us a little bit more multicultural everyday, understanding
what it means to be Creole can help us value more and better comprehend
the different cultures that shape us. The Creole identity is the
archetypal multicultural identity and as such pioneered a redefinition
of the very concept of identity.
This site, in both French and English, is particularly well suited
for English-speaking students with a two-year experience with
the French language or for non-French students eager to discover
more about multiculturalism in general and about diversity within
the francophone world in particular. While the introduction and
activities offered are the same in both languages, the articles
and links differ depending on the language chosen.
To ensure an easier understanding of the Creole identity, this
site starts with an introduction to Maryse Condé, a writer
from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, who explores precisely
that theme in a concrete manner. You can either read the introduction
in its entirety before starting any new activity, or you can stop
after each paragraph and click on the activity or the article
it introduces. Below, please find an overview of the site, which
enables you to go directly to the activities you want. Anyway
you prefer to use this site is the right one as long as you enjoy
it!
Activities include short quizzes about the material discovered,
as well as activities of varying difficulties involving reading
comprehension and essay writing based on some of Condé's
work.
