Introduction to the Icons of France

Let us begin our journey by choosing the Eiffel Tower, a universal symbol of Paris and of modernity, as our starting point. You will find texts introducing the tower and its history. These texts, followed by illustrations of the Tower and visual representations dedicated to it, constitute the first step in our discovery of Paris. Students will in particular be able to compare the different approaches to reading and learning about the Eiffel Tower and compare them to the clichés by which they first became aware of the Tower.

You will also find here illustrations of the World's Fairs having taken place in Paris. They permit us to reflect on how France and the various cultures represented therein affirm and display themselves.

A second step will be to examine the city of Paris, and learn to situate oneself in the capital. The students may (in groups or individually) for example organize an entire day excursion beginning with the information furnished about other monuments or neighborhoods in Paris: La Défense area, the National Library, the Arab World Institute, etc.

Finally, a certain number of songs and various links relating to "Icons of France" are also presented. These sites and links may be used to lead discussion or as a departure point in grander exploration. The official site of the Tower is excellent - don't forget to take a look!
