Euroskepticism: Causes and Consequences
This project brings together researchers who can provide keen insight on Euroskepticism-causes and consequences-from several angles. All participants will present new work on the topic. This project is to produce a special journal issue and edited book on Euroskepticism. Amsterdam; July 1 - 2, 2005

Global Apparel/Clothing Europe
An international workshop and conference on the European clothing industry, held at UNC-Chapel Hill October 15-16, 2004. The workshop and conference brings together researchers studying trade liberalization and production networks in the global clothing industry with policy makers and other stakeholders from government, NGOs, and industry, to explore the changing patterns of production and trade in Central and Eastern Europe, and the roles played by national and EU institutions and markets in these changes as the industry adjusts to EU accession and the pending completion of the integration of clothing into the WTO on January 1, 2005. European Union Integration and Party System Change
In this conference, scholars from across the globe sought crossfertilization of theoretical and empirical work on political parties in Europe and beyond, with a central purpose: to understand the effect of European integration on national political party systems in East and West. Held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina April 23-24, 2004. Sponsored by the Center for European Studies.

Transatlantic Graduate Student Workshop on EU Politics
Sponsored by the European Union Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and BP Transatlantic Programme, European University Institute, Florence, June 7 and 8, 2002. A two-day workshop for advanced Ph.D. students on EU politics to be held at the Robert Schuman Centre, European University Institute, Florence. Women's Voices in the Franco-Arabic World
This conference, April 20, 2002, is part of a series of events examining the Franco-Arabic experience in the modern world. Professors Martine Antle and Sahar Amer, in conjunction with the Center for European Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, collaborated in coordinating and sponsoring this special series. The inaugural event, which took place on April 29, 2000, explored the Veil Debate in France and Europe. Please refer to the Veil website for more details.

Federalism and Multi-Level Governance
Organized by Tanja Börzel (Max Planck-Bonn), Liesbet Hooghe (UNC), Gary Marks (UNC) and Thomas Risse (Freie Univ. Berlin). This workshop seeks to spawn a dialogue between exponents of federalism and multi-level governance in analyzing the character and development of governance in Europe.

Business Interests and the Varieties of Capitalism: Historical Origins and Future Possibilities
Organized by David Coates (WFU), Herbert Kitschelt (Duke), Gary Marks (UNC), David Soskice (Duke), and John Stephens (UNC). The central purpose of the workshop is to explore the degree of integration of the components of production regimes (relations between firms and financial systems, educational and training systems, interfirm relations, industrial relations, etc.) and the degree of integration of the production regime types with the types of welfare states.

Historical Political Economy of Europe
This group is working on a joint research project Money and Finance in Historical Perspective The goal is to analyze the political and institutional effects of the gold standard and so understand more about the implications of current efforts to adopt fixed monetary commitments such as the Euro or dollarization.

Social Democratic Options in the First Decades of the Twenty-first Century
A compendium of works generated from this ongoing working group will be submitted for publishing.  A collaborative UNC-Duke effort headed by John Stephens (UNC-Chapel Hill, Political Science) and Herbert Kitschelt (Duke, Political Science), this working group attracts participation by eminent scholars from across the transatlantic arena.  The conference examines social welfare choices in the 21st century. Fifty Years of the Federal Republic of Germany Through a Gendered Lens
The Center for European Studies is collaborating with DAAD scholar, Angelika von Wahl to organize a yearlong program of activities celebrating Germany's 50th anniversary  as a post-war republic.   As part of this series, there will be a conference fousing on "gendered" Germany.  CES has taken the initiative in producing a website for this event that will include a full listing of all conference and series events as well as the complete set of abstracts and PAPERS for the conference.  Be sure to check back with this site regularly as more papers and announcements are added often.

EU Center Inaugural Teleconference
