| Gary Murphy |

Prof. Murphy is Professor of Government at Dublin City University in Ireland. He is the author of five books and numerous research articles and book chapters. He is a noted specialist on the politics of modern Ireland and is the author of such works as "In Search of the Promised Land: The Politics of Postwar Ireland" (Mercier Press, 2009) and "Continuity, Change and Crisis in Contemporary Ireland" (Routledge, 2010). Prof. Murphy's other main area of expertise is in interest groups and lobbying. He is the author of "Regulating Lobbying: A Global Comparison" (Manchester University Press, 2010) with Raj Chari and John Hogan. Dr. Raivio focuses his work on the role of community colleges in supporting local skills strategies and regional economic development. Permanently Dr. Raivio works for the European Commission in the Directorate General for Education and Culture as head of sector for Vocational Education and Training Policy. From Pirkkala, Finland, he holds a PhD in social sciences from the University of Tampere. He also studied at the University of Konstanz in Germany from 1990-92. CV. |
| Peter Starke |

Professor Peter Starke is a Research Associate in the Collaborative Research Centre 'Transformations of the State' at the University of Bremen. He has been affiliated with this Center since June of 2003. In 2007, Professor Starke earned his PhD (Promotion) in Political Science from the University of Bremen. His dissertation was entitled Radical Welfare State Retrenchment in Comparative Perspective. His teaching has focused on Comparative Social Policy and Qualitative Methods in Political Science. In the fall 2010 semester, he was a Visiting Scholar at UNC-CH's Center for European Studies and taught within the TransAtlantic Masters program called POLI 745: Varieties of Welfare Capitalism. |

Research interests: institution-induced problem-solving, multi-level governance, applications of game theory, international relations theory, and international law. At Chapel Hill he concentrated primarily on the development of the central argument of his dissertation thesis which he denotes as “problem-oriented micro-institutionalization,” especially regarding the regulation of the European steel crises. Arjan Schakel studied Biology (Master in 2003) and Political Science (Master in 2004) at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Currently he is a PhD student at the Department of Political Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is working on the project of Multi-level Governance and European Integration and is especially interested in the division of authority across levels of government. | Kyung Zoon Hong |

Dr. Hong collaborated with UNC Professor John Stephens from January-December 2006, extending his work on East Asian social policy and adding a comparative perspective by studying social policy in the advanced industrial democracies of Western Europe, North America, and Australasia.

Professor Lemke was short-term DAAD Professor in European Studies, 2005-2006. She taught a course in the Transatlantic Masters Program on EU Enlargement and the Case of Turkey. Prof Lemke is a frequent visitor to the CES/EUCE. Indeed, while DAAD professor in the early 1990s she worked with a group of UNC faculty members to help establish the Program in European Studies-the precursor to the current EU Center of Excellence. Professor Mahncke is a noted expert in his field of European Security and Transatlantic Relations. He taught a graduate course in our Transatlantic Masters (TAM) degree program on "Changing European Security in the 21st Century: Implications for the Transatlantic Relationship". Professor Mahncke also spoke on German-American relations in the Center for European Studies Speaker Series and participated in German Studies classes. |
