EU Ambassador John Bruton statement in honor of Dr. Ruth Mitchell-Pitts
I was saddened to learn of Ruth's passing. It is not at all surprising that she faced her illness with great courage and graciousness.
She applied both, as well as a keen sense of humor and vast intellectual and administrative abilities to her work, creating over two decades an impressive range of European and EU studies programs at the University of North Carolina. As I and other visitors to Chapel Hill can attest, Ruth simply had a unique capacity to get things done.
Ruth also led North Carolina in acting as Network and Outreach Coordinator for the now 11 EU Centers of Excellence in the United States. Here too she encouraged team work and a sense of common purpose, helping to make the Network a more coherent whole in promoting greater knowledge of the EU in the United States. She will be sorely missed.
I and my staff wish to offer our condolences to her husband Brent, their daughters and granddaughter, and to Ruth's colleagues at Chapel Hill.
