The
Department of Exercise and Sport Science is recognizing one of its finest
professors, and former Department chair, Dr. Frederick O. Mueller, by
establishing a gathering place in his name between Woollen and Fetzer Gyms.
This gathering place will include reading benches and a landscaped garden with
flowers and shrubbery that will grace our complex. This area will give
students, faculty and staff an aesthetic place to gather, read, and
socialize.
Dr. Fred Mueller has been a member of the faculty for 41years and chaired the
department from 1995-2005. Dr. Mueller has deep roots with UNC Chapel Hill
even before becoming faculty. He is originally from New Jersey, and first
enrolled as a freshman at UNC-CH in the fall of 1956. He completed his BA in
Education in 1961, an M.Ed. in Education in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Education in
1970, all three degrees from UNC-CH. During his career at Carolina, he has
been an assistant football coach, head lacrosse coach, served as Director of
the freshman activities program, and directed the undergraduate physical
education majors program. Dr. Mueller is a seasoned instructor, administrator,
researcher, fitness advocate, and EXSS historian. Please join us in honoring
Dr. Fred Mueller by contributing to Mueller’s Gathering Place. You can
donate to this effort by sending your contribution in the enclosed business
reply envelope of this publication.
