Participants:

Participation in the program will begin with you and your physician discussing the opportunity to participate in the program. If you are from the NC Triangle Affiliate of the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation service area (Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance, and Wake) you are eligible to participate in the program. Patients interested in the program will need to talk to their physician and then contact the program director to receive further information and to set up a visit to the program facilities.

Attention: If you are enrolled on the CanThrive trial, you are not eligible to join the program due to possible interference between the Get REAL & HEEL Breast Cancer Program and the CanThrive trial. If you are not enrolled please check the criteria for participation below.

What is the criteria for participation?

Confirmed diagnosis of Stage I, II, or III invasive breast cancer;
Within 6 months of completion of all planned surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
Ages ranging from 30 to 75 years
Patients receiving adjuvant hormonal therapy or adjuvant trastuzumab are also eligible.

Participation in this study will involve the same risks as any exercise regimen. Given the potential risks involved, patients who are deemed by the supervising program physician to have one of the following conditions will be excluded from the program. The physician evaluation will take place during your first visit to the program.

Cardiovascular, acute or chronic respiratory diseases (unless the disease would not compromise the patient's ability to participate in the exercise rehabilitation program);
Acute or chronic bone, joint, or muscular abnormalities that would compromise the patient's ability to participate in the exercise rehabilitation program;
Adequate renal function with creatinine < 1.5
Immune deficiency that would compromise the patient's ability to participate in the exercise rehabilitation program; ANC < 1.5
Plt < 90,000, HCT < 30
Metastatic disease
