Summary
Claudio Battaglini, Ph.D., is beginning
his fourth year as an assistant
professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Prior to his arrival to
Chapel Hill, Dr. Battaglini conducted research on exercise and cancer at the University of Northern Colorado, Rocky Mountain
Cancer Rehabilitation Institute. His work conducting cancer and
exercise research has
culminated into published research articles
involving the management of cancer treatment related symptoms through the administration of
prescriptive exercise. Dr. Battaglini has presented his
work nationally and internationally, and is currently the PI of a
research trial involving patients with acute leukemia (The EQUAL
Project) and is a co-founder and co-director of the Get REAL & HEEL
Breast Cancer program. Both projects have been developed in
collaboration with the UNC-CH Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer
Center, UNC-CH Hospitals, and the UNC-CH Department of Exercise and Sport
Science. The EQUAL project includes the administration of
prescriptive exercise for in-hospital in-treatment
leukemia patients.
The phase I
of the Equal project has been completed and Phase II, a randomized
controlled trial is in its final stage of development and will begin
mid spring 2008. Physiological, psychological, and the analysis
of a panel of 25 different cytokines are parameters assessed in all
patients enrolled in the Equal project. The
GET REAL &
HEEL breast cancer research program is a program that uses a novel
intervention that combines exercise and recreation therapy activities
to assist post-treated women with breast cancer to cope with side
effects developed during treatment. The overall program goal is
to increase the chances of survivorship by providing patients with
opportunities to strengthen their body and mind thereby contributing
to increased quality of life during cancer treatment.
Dr. Battaglini recently received an
UNC-CH Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinical/Translational
Grant Award and the UNC-CH Junior Faculty Development Grant Award to
further this line of research at UNC-CH. These awards will allow
for the enrollment of more patients into these two programs,
refinement of intervention protocols, dissemination of study results,
and to start exploring the possibility to expand these programs to
other hospitals in the state of North Carolina, and around the
country.
Prior to Dr. Battaglini’s involvement in cancer
and exercise research, he was an international level endurance sports
coach, with some of his athletes achieving World Champion status,
Pan-American Champion status, and Olympic Game appearances. (Click

Dr. Battaglini is a member of the American
College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Southeast American College of
Sports Medicine (SEACSM), Associate Member of the Lineberger
Comprehensive Cancer Center, Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA),
The American Physiological Society, and the American Society of
Exercise Physiologists. He currently is an editor for the
Brazilian Journal of Biomotricity and Medicina Sportiva; reviewer for The
Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, British Journal of Sports Medicine,
and ACSM's Health and Fitness Journal.
