Professional Summary
Dr. Debby Stroman,
a professor in the Sport Administration specialization, has three primary
responsibilities for EXSS: instruction, internship coordination, and
departmental academic advising. Her courses include administration, finance
and economics, marketing, and leadership. As the coordinator of the
undergraduate field experience (internship) program, she seeks to provide
sport administration students with a valuable practicum that matches their
career interest. In addition, she developed the Applied Leadership Program,
which enables students to participate in experiential education activities
in sport management with the Atlantic Coast Conference. Dr. Stroman also
enjoys working with UNC's Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and
the NCAA's Office of Diversity and Inclusion on special projects. She
received her degrees from the University of Virginia (B.S.), University of
North Carolina (M.A. in Sport Administration), and Capella University (Ph.D.
in Organization and Management). Her dissertation topic is "The Critical
Success Factors of the Atlantic Coast Conference." Dr. Stroman's
research interests are leadership, marketing, entrepreneurship, and social
issues of sport. She is the faculty advisor for the Carolina Sports Business
Club and Sigma Alpha Lamba, a leadership honors society.
Prior to her appointment
at UNC, Dr. Debby successfully owned and managed sports marketing, financial
consulting, and nutritional supplement companies. She is the 2006 recipient
of the state of Maryland's Top MBE Award, which recognizes leadership, and
business and entrepreneurial success. She also has experience as a grant
writer, philanthropic development officer, and fundraiser for non-profit
organizations. Dr. Stroman is the owner of L.A.S.E.R. (Life After Sports
With Effective Results), which provides life coaching and transition
planning to former athletes, and Soulful Golf, Inc. She is former basketball
player at UVA and assistant coach for the Tar Heels. Previous employment
experience includes intercollegiate athletics, corporate management, and
financial planning.
