This summer the Department of Exercise & Sport Science (EXSS) began it inaugural program to bring students from UNC to Montevideo, Uruguay so they could take classes and study at the Instituto Universitario ACJ (College of Physical Education). The students are taking 6 week courses in "Exercise Physiology" and "Sports Nutrition" in English along with students from Latin America. The courses have between 15 and 22 students in each of them and there is a variety of Latin countries represented - Uruguay, Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba. The UNC students have been welcomed by their classmates and numerous academic and social events have been taking place. A welcoming reception was held by the Instituto Universitario where the college board of trustees, faculty members, student representatives, as well as the director of Public Affairs and 'chargés d'affaires' from the U.S. Embassy where in attendance. The students are living in a section of the city that is approximately a 15 minute bus ride to the college, which is near the heart of everything in the city. Both cultural and academic experiences are planned for the time the UNC students are in Uruguay. The UNC faculty residence director is Dr. Anthony C. Hackney of EXSS.
