Welcome to the 2008
Athletic Leadership Symposium! The ALS Planning Committee seeks your
attendance at this first annual event to showcase intercollegiate athletic
administration. Invited speakers and guests include the leading managers
of NCAA sport programs from the region. This year’s topics of interest
include the economics of college sports, marketing women’s basketball, and
the escalation and complexity of coaching contracts! Don’t miss this
exciting gathering held in conjunction with the 2008 NCAA Greensboro
Regional.

Bernadette V. McGlade, associate
commissioner of women's basketball for the ACC, contacted Dr. Debby
Stroman (former UVA women's basketball player) to spearhead the
coordination of this first annual leadership conference. The
purpose of the 2008 ALS is to provide an educational and
professional networking opportunity at the Greensboro Regional. |

BRANDON FANNEY
Brandon Fanney,
a native of Durham, North Carolina, received a B.S. degree in
Business Administration from UNC-CH in 2004. Prior to enrollment,
Brandon led a tool & fastener division for HD Supply Electric in
Raleigh. In two years, he turned a brand new business into the
second largest branch in the company. Prior to this assignment, he
worked for Black & Decker in Northern New Jersey and New York City.
He traveled the east coast successfully executing NASCAR promotions,
designed to activate the company's DEWALT power tool brand.
Brandon's goal is to pursue a career in collegiate sports marketing.
His career goal is to be the director of marketing at a NCAA
Division I-A university and ultimately, an athletic director.
PATRICK GRAY
Patrick Gray,
a native of Oakville, Ontario, Canada, received an Honors Bachelor
of Sports Management from Brock University in 2003. Prior to
attending graduate school, he worked in marketing for the Toronto
Blue Jays Baseball Club. While attending Brock University, Patrick
was a teaching assistant, conducting seminars for first year
students. During his senior year Patrick wrote a thesis on the
impact of revenue sharing as a means of achieving financial
competitive balance in the National Hockey League. His thesis was
selected to be presented at the North American Society for Sport
Management conference in Ithaca, NY. Patrick's interests lie in
marketing and communications. He aspires to be an athletic director
at an NCAA institution.
BLAKE GRIFFIN
Blake Griffin,
a native of Boone, North Carolina, is a dual degree candidate in Law
and Sports Administration at the UNC-CH. Blake began his collegiate
athletic career at UNC-Asheville where he played soccer; however,
after a series of injuries, Blake transferred to UNC-CH and
graduated in 2003 with a B.A. in Public Policy. While attending UNC-CH,
Blake coached youth soccer with the Triangle Futbol Club. After
working several years following graduation, Blake came back to UNC
as the first admit of the newly created dual degree in Law and
Sports Administration. Blake continues to stay involved in soccer by
coaching with Triangle United Soccer Association. Blake is
interested in legal issues in collegiate athletics and aspires to be
an athletic director at an NCAA institution or work in the sport law
industry.
KRISTINA MEISSEN
Kristina Meissen, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, received a B.S. in
Exercise and Sport Science with a major in Sport Management, minor
in Business Administration, and concentration in Strength and
Conditioning from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2006.
Kristina was actively involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee while competing as a student-athlete in Women's Rowing and
Track and Field. Prior to attending graduate school, Kristina served
as an intern with the UW’s Division of Student-Athlete Academic
Services. There she worked directly with the CHAMPS and Life Skills
Director and served as a teaching assistant. In addition, she worked
as a mentor and tutor for freshmen student-athletes. Kristina's
interests lie in the area of student-athlete development and the
unique connection between athletics and academics within an
institution of higher education. Her career goals are to secure a
position within an NCAA institution specializing in student-athlete
development with a long term goal of becoming a Senior Woman
Administrator.
