The Master of Arts degree
in EXSS, with a specialization in Sport Administration, has a curriculum
of course work, practical experiences, and research that requires students
to be "in residence" throughout all four semesters of two consecutive
academic years. The structure, progression and sequence of the curriculum
requires a full-time, two year – four semester commitment from all
students accepting an offer of admission.
First Year:
The first year’s curriculum consists of four courses each semester, with
each course being three-credit hours. In addition to this coursework, a
variety of practical experiences in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of
Athletics, the College Sport Research Institute, and initial development
of a thesis research project are also key components of this year.
Second Year:
In September all second year students must take a comprehensive
examination over first-year coursework. During the second year, two
one-credit hour seminar courses, one taken each semester, are required.
These courses bring together the second-year student cohort for discussion
of intercollegiate athletic program issues, and ongoing analysis and
reflection of the internship in which each student is involved
concurrently throughout the year. These seminars involve an interactive
teaching-learning process that requires the presence and active
participation of each student to accomplish desired educational outcomes.
In the fall semester, each student will make a formal proposal of their
thesis research project and - after approval of both the thesis committee
and a University-level IRB - begin their research. Research and writing
of the thesis will continue into the spring semester, culminating in the
defense of the thesis and submission of the completed document to the
Graduate School. Each student is required to register for three hours of
thesis credit in both the fall and spring semesters (Total of six).
Throughout the academic year each student works in a required, assigned,
full-time internship position in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of
Athletics, or an affiliated agency, i.e., the UNC-Chapel Hill Educational
Foundation (Rams Club) and Tar Heel Sports Marketing. The internships
begin with the first day of classes in the fall semester and ends with the
last day of classes in the spring semester.
