Equipment Checkout

Who can check out the equipment?

Current folklore students.

What equipment do we have?

Click here for a complete inventory. (Please note that the inventory list is being reviewed. Aaron Smithers has alread confirmed that there are items in the inventory list that he has never seen. Eddie Huffman will do an inventory shortly)

How do I check equipment out?

  1. Email Eddie Huffman at elhuffma[at]email.unc.edu to reserve equipment.

  2. Come pick up equipment at the Manuscripts Department reference desk on the 4th floor of Wilson Library. It will be waiting or you on the SFC "hold" shelf.

  3. Complete the form that's with the equipment.

How long can I have equipment checked out?

Two weeks max. If you need more time, you MUST email Eddie with a request for an extension. If no one else is waiting on the equipment, you will be able to hold onto it. NEVER hand off equipment to a fellow student. It must ALWAYS be returned to the SFC before it is checked out anew.

What do I do if I have problems with the equipment?

Contact Eddie by email. In a dire emergency, call him at home: 932-7463. PLEASE report any problems when returning equipment.

What is the procedure for returning equipment?

Bring it back to Wilson Library and have an SFC employee check it back in. They will check to see that all the components are present and intact. Report any problems at this time.

When can I check out the DAT recorder and stereo microphone?

The DAT recorder and stereo mic are available for special projects where high quality sound is necessary, e.g. sound for audio and video documentaries or field recordings of live music. The DAT recorder and mic cannot be used for field interviews unless they will be broadcast. To check out the DAT and mic, email Eddie and arrange to pick it up from him.

How do I make back-up copies of my DAT tapes on CD or cassette?

You can back up your field tapes at the dubbing station in carrel number 4201 in Davis Library. You must first contact Aaron to arrange a time and key pick-up/drop-off.
