Tovares Receives Award from CLAS

Congratulations are in order for Carlos Tovares, a post-doc in UNC's geography department and recent PhD from the University of Washington's geography department. Carlos won an award from the Consortium in Latin American Studies (Duke and UNC) for a proposal for the creation of a new UNC/Duke working group on: "Citizenship Across Borders: Locating Latin American Transnationalism". The new working group will explore and theorize political, social, and cultural dimensions of Latin American transnational practices. We will examine the movement of people and the implications of transnational practices for both Latin American and US societies by foregrounding multiple dimensions of citizenship: legal, cultural, imagined, and utopian. Most importantly, CITIZENSHIP ACROSS BORDERS will problematize the dichotomous framing of the US and Latin America, and will articulate alternative geographies of social and spatial locations. Three or four prominent scholars will be invited to give public lectures and small group discussions on the topic.
