Geography Department Undergraduate Advising

All Department of Geography undergraduate majors and minors are assigned a department adviser. The role of the department adviser is to help with geography course advising, to give geography career advice, and to provide other advice related to the major (e.g., help with decisions about dual majors, minors, study abroad programs). Each student chooses a concentration area within Geography which corresponds with their interests; students are assigned advisers with expertise in their declared concentration area. The concentration areas within geography are:

1. Earth Environmental Systems (EES) - advisers Aaron Moody and Chip Konrad
2. Geographic Information Sciences (GISci) - advisers Steve Walsh and Conghe Song
3. Geography of Human Activity (GHA) - advisers Steve Birdsall, Banu Gökariksel and Wendy Wolford

If you are interested in majoring in geography, please fill out the form for prospective majors , and return it to Nell Phillips in the Geography Department Office (205A Saunders Hall). The Director of Undergraduate Studies, Mike Emch, will then contact you to set up an initial advising appointment.

If you are already a geography major and have not yet been assigned an adviser, please contact the Geography Student Services Manager, Nell Phillips, in 205A Saunders Hall or by phone at (919)962-8902. The Geography Student Services Manager also keeps a master list of the advisers for each Department of Geography major and minor.

Advising for issues that do not involve the geography major or geography courses is provided by the UNC College of Arts and Sciences Academic Advising Program. College of Arts and Sciences Advisers are responsible for all non-major related advising including providing information about general education requirements and conducting degree audits.
