North Carolina German Studies Annual Workshop
Along with the History Department at UNC and the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Duke, the Department hosted the first annual German Studies Workshop at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities on April 11 and 12, 2008. The workshop invited nine scholars from North Carolina, the US and Europe to discuss the complexities of West Germany's student movement from the late sixties. The Workshop's keynote speaker was German author Peter Schneider who presented portions of his new memoir about 1968 entitled Rebellion und Wahn.
Welcome Our New Faculty Member
Ruth von Bernuth. Dr. von Bernuth received her Ph.D. at the Humboldt Universität in Berlin, Germany where she studied early modern German literature. In addition to writing extensively on fools and folly in the Early Modern Period, she is also a specialist in disability studies, old yiddish literature, as well as cultural transfer between Christian and Jewish cultures. Dr. von Bernuth will join the faculty in the fall of 2008 and will teach a an undergraduate course on fools.
Undergrad Job Workshop Fall 2008
We're planning a workshop for undergraduate majors next fall, where they will get to explore job opportunities open to them with a degree in German. If you would like to participate in this event, we'd be very grateful. Please let Dr. Anna Parkinson, our new Director of Undergraduate Studies, know if you are willing to take part in such a workshop and share your experiences and expertise with our current students.
