German
House
The German House Living and Learning program
was established in 1986 to offer an environment in which UNC
students might pursue their interests in German language and
culture on a daily basis. The German House is located on the
first floor of Carmichael Residence Hall, the newest and perhaps
most conveniently located dorm on campus. With eight double-occupancy
rooms, there is space for sixteen students, along with a kitchen
and lounge (activity room). German House residents generally
consist of a cross section of female and male, undergraduate
and graduate, and local and international students. Residents
ordinarily have a varied level of proficiency in German. Some
entering students have completed only two semesters of German;
others are already quite fluent. Some students live in the
German House before spending a year or semester abroad; others
live in the House (or return to the House) after a study abroad
experience. Every year we will also have a native German exchange
student from Tübingen live in the German House as a graduate
assistant. The program is coordinated by two student leaders
who plan and provide regular group activities focusing on
German language, culture and politics.Selection process for
the German House generally begins in early February. For further
information, please contact Stefanie Wollwinder.
