Scholarships for K-12 and Community College Teachers

Scholarships covering 50% of tuition are available for all seminars for currently employed full-time teachers, librarians, and administrators in K-12 public and private schools and community colleges. New as of spring 2007: Daisy Edmister Fund for teachers to further subsidize teacher costs. Click here for more information.

Teacher scholarships for our seminars are generally supported by the Roger M. & May Belle Penn Jones Fund of the Humanities Program. We also gratefully acknowledge the support of the Center for Global Initiatives, the U.S. Department of Education Title VI Program, the UNC Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, and the Parr Center for Ethics.

Applicants for the Center for Global Initiatives assistance must indicate on the registration form a financial need for a scholarship. Participants are responsible for the costs of optional meals associated with seminars, when applicable. We encourage applications from underserved school districts. Funding restrictions do not allow us to award scholarships to substitute or retired teachers. Teachers may apply for scholarships for all seminars. Please note, however, that you may not have a first time participant’s discount and a teacher scholarship for the same seminar.

To Apply for a Scholarship or Discount

Complete and sign the scholarship or discount portion of the registration form and enclose payment of the remainder of the tuition (that is, the full tuition less the scholarship or discount) and optional meals. Of the amount you pay, $30 is non-refundable. Reservations for meals may be cancelled up to noon two business days before a seminar. Applications without a signature or payment cannot be processed and will be returned.

Renewal Credit

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction no longer approves activities for renewal credit. Instead, it leaves those judgments to the school systems. Upon your completion of a seminar, we will provide you with a certificate stating that you attended the seminar and listing the number of contact hours.

Scholarships for Community College Teachers

With the support of the Jones Fund we are able to award partial scholarships (50% of the tuition fee) to full-time community college faculty members. Scholarships are available for all seminars.

Daisy Edmister Fund
Exciting News for Teachers and Librarians!

The Humanities Program is proud to announce the completion of a special endowment based in Adventures in Ideas Weekend and Summer Seminars. The Daisy Edmister Teacher Support Fund, given by Mr. Russell Edmister, honors the memory of Mr. Edmister’s mother, Daisy M. Edmister. Thanks to the Daisy Edmister Fund, we are able to offer a limited number of $50 stipends to currently-employed, full-time, K-12 and community college teachers who attend our seminars. These stipends will be awarded expressly to help teachers defray their costs of travel, lodging, and the payment of substitute teachers. Eligibility is contingent on the completion of a weekend or summer seminar. Stipends will be awarded on a random basis. Please note that teachers and librarians are eligible for one stipend per semester. For more information, please call 919/962-1544.
