PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Permanent residency, or the "green card", provides many of the rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship, most importantly the ability to live and work in the U.S. for the rest of your life. U.S. permanent residents remain citizens of their own country and travel on their countries' passports. After five years, a permanent resident that received the "green card" through an employment-based petition may apply for U.S. citizenship, but is not required to do so.

University Support for Employment Based Permanent Residence Applications
The employment-based permanent residence application requires a permanent position; therefore the University will not support applications for temporary positions, such as postdoctoral research positions. International Student and Scholar Services now has a staff member to assist you with a permanent residence application upon the University's declaration of support evidenced by the department chair's, dean's, and provost's signatures on the Preliminary Information for UNC-Chapel Hill Departments Supporting an Application for Permanent Residence for a Foreign Academic Staff Member. For more information please contact Ronit Weingarden at International Student and Scholar Services.
