/ Scholar Orientation Other useful links regarding orientation include the For International Students section and the Resources section of this website. Check
In During the check-in procedure the student or scholar, after filling out the PR 100, will be given the Social Security Number (SSN) application form and instructions on where and when to apply and will be issued a temporary number that can be used by the department to put the individual on payroll. The employee is responsible for applying for the actual SSN since the Payroll Department will require proof of application. The student or scholar will be instructed to fill out the following forms at the department: I-9, W-4 and NC-4. This of course also has to be done in the first few days after one's arrival. New employees are informed that a tax treaty might exist between their country and the U.S. Of course each country has a different tax treaty and individuals are advised to become familiar with the treaty before they decide if they want to take advantage of the treaty. It is important to understand that not everyone will benefit from the treaty, that ones' immigration status, his/her length of stay in the U.S., ones' immigration history, country of origin and other factors will affect how and which tax treaty one can use. The tax treaty form 8233 is signed at the Payroll Department in Ron Sternowski's office at 440 W. Franklin St. Each employee needs to make an appointment with Mr. Sternowski before going to his office to sign the treaty form. If the student or scholar wants to continue to take advantage of a tax treaty he/she needs to sign the 8233 form every December for the upcoming year. Failure to sign the form will result in automatic cancellation of the tax treaty for the following year. Departure
