The
International Student and Scholar Orientation Counselor Program is designed
to assist newly-arrived international students at UNC-Chapel Hill with cultural adjustment,
and to provide an opportunity for intercultural exchange among students,
both international and American. We are looking for undergraduates and
graduate students who are willing to return to Chapel Hill a week before
classes begin. This period is probably the most confusing and trying time
for new foreign students, so it is very important that Orientation Counselors
be available then.
There
are many ways to help new students settle into their new living situations
in Chapel Hill. Orientation Counselors generally help newly arrived students
with setting up checking accounts, preparing for registration, buying
textbooks, and general shopping needs.
Our Orientation Counselor Program begins on the
Wednesday before classes begin in August. We will discuss important adjustment
issues that international students face, talk about specific tasks of
Orientation Counselors and spend some time preparing Orientation Packets
for the next four or five days of the International Student Orientation
Program. Orientation Counselors will be asked to spend two to three hours
each day helping with International Student Orientation. OC's also need
to help plan our International Student Welcome Party.
If you think you would like to be an Orientation
Counselor, please complete the Orientation
Counselor Application and return it to International Student and Scholar Services
or email us. The application deadline is April 30th.
Being
an Orientation Counselor is always a rewarding experience, and you will
no doubt find a number of ways besides those mentioned in which you might
be helpful to new students. We look forward to your participation in this
program. For more information, stop by International Student and Scholar Services, email us at oisss@unc.edu or call
us at 962-5661.
