OTHER Visa TYPES Most international students who study full-time at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) are in F-1 or J-1 Student visa status. These two visa types require full-time enrollment and each allows for employment on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus within U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) regulations. Full-time or part-time study at UNC-Chapel Hill is possible for an individual in another non-immigrant visa status such as J-2, H-4, E-2, L-2, or O-3. Those who are in B-1 or B-2 status may not attend school full-time, as this would constitute a violation of their visitor visa status. Nonimmigrants in a visa status other than those listed above may also be allowed to study at UNC-Chapel Hill. We ask that all enrolled students check in at the Office of International Student and Scholar Services with your passports and visa documents so that we may welcome you, keep accurate records, and be able to advise you appropriately when needed. Nonimmigrants who are in the United States in a dependent visa status such as J-2, H-4, E-2, L-2, etc. may study full-time or part-time. While most dependents are not permitted to be employed on the campus, those in J-2 status who have applied for and received an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) from the USCIS may be employed. Dependents must change visa status if the primary visa holder (parent or spouse) plans to leave the United States for more than a temporary visit. In general, dependents who are not spouses may remain in dependent status only if they are under the age of 21. To change to a student visa status, please see the Office of International Student and Scholar Services staff regarding procedures at least 6 months before your 21st birthday, or prior to the primary visa holder's departure from the U.S. You will need to provide proof of financial support at the time you apply for a change of status. If you have applied for a green card or someone has applied for a green card on your behalf, please let the Office of International Student and Scholar Services know when you receive permanent residency.
