Concentration (6 total courses in either Track 1 or 2)

Track 1 

International Studies Concentration

    • 4 courses in one of the four themes listed below
    • 2 courses that anchor the theme an area studies region

(INTS 692H, Honors Seminar, may count as one of the 6 courses)

Track 2

Area Studies Concentration

    • 4 courses in one of the area studies regions listed below
    • 2 thematic courses to contexualize the area studies

(INTS 692H, Honors Seminar, may count as one of the 6 courses)

Of the six concentration courses, four must be above the survey level.*

Foreign Language Requirement

    • 6 levels total
    • Requirement may be filled with 4 levels of one language
      and 2 levels of another
    • The primary language needs to be relevant to the declared area concentration. (Click here for a list of approved languages by region. This list is also available from your academic advisor.)

International Studies Themes

1.       International politics, nation states, social movements

2.       Global economics, trade, development

3.       Global health and environment
(NOTE: For students declaring the major prior to fall 2008, global health and environment theme courses may count toward the global economics theme)

4.       Transnational cultures, identities, arts

    • Russia/Eastern Europe

*Above Survey Level: In the new curriculum, all courses numbered 200 and higher are above survey level.

Important Note: Courses in the major must have a substantially contemporary focus. Only courses that predominantly cover material from the latter part of the nineteenth century to the present will qualify.
