The minimum foreign language requirement for the B.A. in International
and Area Studies is either (a) 6 levels study or equivalent of a modern
language relevant to the student's concentration or (b) 4 levels study or
equivalent of one modern language and 2 levels study or equivalent of
another modern language. The four-level language must be appropriate
to the regional area concentration selected by the student. The other
language should be in the regional area if possible. Click
here for a list of approved languages by region (this list is also
available from your academic advisor). Of the six required levels of
language, at least three must be satisfied at UNC-Chapel Hill or as part of
a UNC-approved study abroad program.
International and Area Studies majors are strongly encouraged to develop
proficiency beyond the required minimum by taking additional language,
literature or LAC
(Languages Across the Curriculum) courses, and are urged to study abroad in
a country where their language is spoken.
