Internship, Career, and Graduate School
Opportunities
Each International Studies major who is accepted into a UNC-approved
study abroad program is automatically considered for a CIAS study abroad
scholarship. These awards, ranging from $1,000 to $2,500, are to be used to
cover related expenses for a UNC-approved study abroad or foreign exchange
program. Only International Studies majors are eligible for these
scholarships.
Your application through the Study Abroad Office will be forwarded to
the Curriculum for evaluation; no separate application is necessary. Awards
are made twice each year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Students
selected to receive the scholarships will be notified by mail in November
(for fall awards) or in March (for spring awards).

The Honors Office
offers financial awards to support senior honors thesis research. There are
two funding cycles per year, with proposal deadlines in September and
March. The March funding cycle makes funding awards to students whose
projects are sufficiently well-planned that they could begin work over the
summer before their senior year. Award funds may be used to support any
legitimate cost directly connected to the undertaking of the honors
project. Students must meet the honors minimum cumulative GPA requirement
of 3.2 to apply for an award. Projects with an international dimension may
qualify for a supplemental award of up to $500 from the Center for Global
Initiatives. Students must apply through the Curriculum in International
and Area Studies; please contact Christiana
Hilkey for more information. The
deadline for the spring 2009 funding cycle is March 20, 2008 at 4:00 pm.
Funding is also available through the Office of
Undergraduate Research, and the Center for
Global Initiatives offers awards to students conducting international
research projects.

These scholarships are for undergraduates pursuing research or
professional experience projects with an international focus. For more
information see the Center for
Global Initatives.
The Office of
Undergraduate Research has developed a database of research
opportunities for undergraduates. This database allows faculty (and also
research associates, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students) to
advertise a wide range of possible research experiences, including those
connected with particular courses, volunteer positions, paid positions, and
mentored scholarship that can lead to an undergraduate thesis. Anyone with
an appropriate posting that is approved by a faculty member should go to
the website listed above, click on "Research Opportunities" and
then on "Post a New Research Opportunity." The entire list can be
examined by selecting "Browse Research Opportunities."

The Office of
Undergraduate Research wishes to help students find internship and
other research opportunities that match their interests. They also are
working on ways to integrate undergraduate internships and summer research
experiences with campus activities. Accordingly, they have developed an
online internship questionnaire for students.
We advise you review the Curriculum's requirements
for obtaining internship credit toward the International Studies major.
