STUDY ABROAD

International and Area Studies majors are strongly urged to gain experiential knowledge of the countries or thematic concerns they are studying through participation in an approved Study Abroad program appropriate to their concentration. Every effort will be made by the curriculum to fully integrate study abroad courses into the major. Students should seek guidance from the Study Abroad office as well as major and college advisors in planning their study abroad program. Once they have done this, they must receive course approval from the Director of Undergraduate Studies of the CIAS major prior to departure for a program abroad. No credit will be given unless programs are pre-approved. Approval is made either with a letter from the Director of Undergraduate Studies or on a "Departmental Approval" form provided by the Study Abroad office. Contact Jonathan Weiler, Director of Undergraduate Studies, at 962-0491 or jweiler@email.unc.edu for more information. When submitting a credit request via e-mail, be sure to follow these guidelines.

Students may receive credit for up to three courses (nine credits) in a UNC-approved semester abroad program. This includes UNC programs abroad sponsored by various academic units, such as Honors, and administered by the Study Abroad office. Courses taken abroad can only be used in the theme/area concentration portion of the major. Students may not receive credit for core courses while abroad. With the approval of the CIAS Director of Undergraduate Studies, a student who completes more than one semester abroad may receive credit for up to four courses (12 credits) in one academic year, or a maximum of five courses (15 credits) if studying abroad more than one academic year. All requirements that apply to courses taken in residence at UNC also apply to study abroad courses.

Majors should consider study abroad as a research opportunity for an honors thesis. All International Studies majors accepted into UNC Study Abroad programs are considered for CIAS study abroad scholarships.
