On Friday and Saturday, September 6 and 7, 2002, the students of Dr. Francisco Werner's First Year Seminar "Where Did All the Fish Go?" took a field trip to help them apply their classroom learning to the natural world. The group went from Chapel Hill to Morehead City, North Carolina, and from there embarked on a boat to study patterns of fish population, marine food supply, and their relationship to different natural factors and to human coastal development in nearby areas. The students took various measurements of water samples and made systematic observations of sealife occurrence and distribution.

This trip, a valuable opportunity for students to participate in active research and to gain first-hand experience with their topic of classroom study, was sponsored by a Course Enhancement Grant provided by the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence.
