Music,
video and other multimedia files
Like text or images, sound files are copyright-protected. It is no
defense that only a portion of the song or video has been used. There
is no "magic number" of seconds of a song or video that is allowed.
While de minimis copying (copying a small amount) is not an infringement,
there are no "bright line" rules that tell you when you've violated someone's
rights.
For instance, both Paramount and Fox prohibited the use of sound files
and video clips on the fan pages they targeted, even though the clips were
only a few seconds long. One reason for Fox's crackdown may have
been the fact that it was marketing its own CD of Simpsons sound files.
