What is the Treasure Hunt?
The Treasure Hunt is a combination of library and Internet research on a topic of your choosing, writing a story about the Internet, and digging through websites and electronic databases to find answers to specific questions. It usually takes a good amount of time (four to eight hours!), but you will really know how to make good use of electronic and online data resources, all the while learning more about something you already like!
The goals of the assignment are...
- To pick a research topic you can explore all semester without getting bored;
- To get experience in clearly and concisely defining a research question by using keywords and Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) headings to stretch or shink your topic so that it can be used to explore a variety of information sources;
- To learn about keywords and LCSH; and
- To use effecient search skills for the UNC-CH library catalog, Academic Univerise Lexis-Nexis, electronic databases such as InfoTrac, and World Wide Web sources.
The specifics of the Treasure Hunt can be found in pages 251 - 262 of the Dead Tree Edition.
