How to Put a Counter on Your UNC Home Page

These are Deb's instructions for how to use UNC-CH's Counter Setup Page, which will automatically create a counter for your page.

  1. When you type in a name for the data file please try to put a unique name in other words avoid names such as jack or harry. That may already have been taken.
  2. For example I typed in "qwer4t". And following is the message I received.
The data file you requested has been setup and you can now refer to it in your HTML document like so:
    <IMG SRC="/cgi-bin/Count.cgi?ft=0|frgb=69;139;50| tr=0|trgb=0;0;0|wxh=15;20|md=6|dd=C|st=5|sh=1| df=qwer4t.dat" align=absmiddle>
  3. If you put your tag on your html coded page. The counter will show up.

What each argument means:

  1. ft = Frame Width
This variable ranges from 0 (no frame) to 9 (very thick frame) and specifies the width of the frame.
  2. frgb = Frame Color
This variable specifies the color of the frame in RGB format, with the red, green, and blue indices seperated by a semicolon.
  3. tr = Transparency
This is a flag that turns transparency on or off. 0 for off and 1 for on.
  4. trgb = Transparency Color
This variable specifies the color within the digits to turn transparent. It, too, is specified in RGB format, with the red, green, and blue indices seperated by a semicolon.
  5. wxh = Width & Height of each digit
This variable specifies the width and height of the digit in pixels. The indices are seperated by a semicolon. You will most likely need to change this value if you change digit types.
  6. md = Maximum Digits
This is the number of digits to show. It must be between five and ten.
  7. dd = Digit Type
These are the different styles of digits. As of now, we have styles A through D available.
  8. st, sh = unknown
  9. df = Data File
This is the name of the data file that contains the actual number. Use the one that you chose in this setup (qwer4t).
Warning: You cannot access the counter page again without creating another counter. Take the time to either print this out or bookmark the following link.
