Uses and abuses of electronic information

Topics for today:

  • Mass media "branding" online
  • Issues of publicity and privacy
  • Net abuse? Pornography, gambling and addiction
  • Business on the net breeds spam and "push"

Assignment

  • Review some of the media links below (previously listed on Monday's page).
  • Read or review the "Electronic Business Information" sections of DTE, including the J50 How to find information about companies page and its explanation of SEC forms, especially the "10K" (which is not "K" for kilobytes).
  • If you haven't talked about a page in class yet, pick two of your favorite Web sites for discussion:
    • Why do you like them?
    • How did you find them?
    • Who made them, and why?
    • What alternative sources could confirm the information or pose critical questions about it?
  • Press on with the Treasure Hunt!

Books for the (August) beach:

  • Fidler, Roger. Mediamorphosis: Understanding new media. Thousand Oaks, CA:Pine Forge Press, 1997.
An experienced newspaper designer goes into detail on 10 years of attempting to design the "mass media" of the future (especially a "portable tablet") while the Internet crept up in the background.
  • Negroponte, Nicolas. Being Digital. New York: Vintage Books, 1995.
This is a collection of short, opinionated articles by the founder of MIT's Media Lab on (as the title suggests) the possibilities digital media hold for our future. He believes that mass media will be transformed from "publisher-push" to "reader-pull," allowing you or your software to select personalized stories for your "Daily Me" media.
