Web Searching and Information Power
Goals for today:
- Get even more comfortable with the Macintoshes and Netscape.
- Learn some strategies for selecting good keywords and how to use them
to conduct effective and efficient searches.
- Discuss electronic note-taking in ASCII and HTML.
- Become acquainted with a variety of electronic searching methods, including
databases, online catalogs and the Web.
- Search for some information about turkey racing.
Assignment:
- If you still don't have an email account, create one at any UNC computer
lab, the ATN (Academic Technology and Networks) Help Desk at 300 Wilson
Library, or go to the ATN's
UserID Services
- Review Macintosh Basics (pages 91-98) in the Dead Tree Edition, and skim the
Internet Essentials and Finding Stuff on the Web handouts, pages 100-113.
- Start thinking about your reseach topic (Phase One)
- Read about keywords and searching in the Dead Tree Edition,
pgs. 12-32, especially 13, 14, 25 and 32.
- Get a jump on Monday's class and read about Internet history and people in the Dead Tree Edition,
pgs.123-134
