The Final Four of Treasure-Hunting
Date: July 26, 1998

Heading into the home stretch with July flying by, here are the instructions for Treasure Hunt #2, which has four parts...
I recommend you tackle a section a day, Monday through Thursday, then wrap up your Research web page on Friday (but weekend lab hours will be available if needed--let me know how you're doing on Thursday and I'll make the arrangements). If you wrap up the Web page on Friday, you can relax and maybe even study for the final exam through the weekend. On Monday we'll have a final review for the exam (and celebrate what we've learned together). I suggest getting plenty of sleep Tuesday night, since we meet bright and early Wednesday for an 8 a.m. exam. But first...
Treasure Hunt #2 Deadline: Friday, July 31, 4 p.m.
please place completed papers
in box on Deb Aikat's door,
Room 01, Howell HallThis is essentially Sections Five through Eight of the Treasure Hunt described in the Dead Tree Edition, with some additions to Section Five.
For Sections Six through Eight, please follow the DTE Treasure Hunt description on pages 257 and 258. Note that these three sections are not restricted to your overall research topic.
- The fifth section is the "Internet Resources on Your Topic" section, as described in the Dead Tree Edition, pages 256-258, with two exceptions:
- You may use Yahoo as well as Encyclopedia Britannica Internet Guide to find the three "Section five" treasures. Come as close as you can to your topic, but stick to those sources and list the three best using the DTE format given on page 256.
- In addition to the Title, Web address, Brief Description, and Source for each site (as described in DTE), include one or two sentences of evaluation for each of the three sites. Example:
Description: Home page for Triangle-area bluegrass club, with calendar of events and links to home pages of other music organizations and individuals.
Evaluation: Not a slick commercial site, clearly a labor of love. Original content includes sound samples of local banjo players recorded at summer festivals in North Carolina.
Source:... see DTE p.256
- You may use the Section-Five treasures as part of your Research Web page, but you may also change or add to them based on your other research during the month.
- Your Internet research for Section Five will be graded as part of Treasure Hunt #2, even if you turned it in with Treasure Hunt #1 (under the work-all-weekend plan). If you finished it as a weekend project, you are welcome to continue researching your topic and include the results on your Research Web page, but do not submit any additional Web research as part of the Treasure Hunt.
Do be sure to add your comment on the assignment as described on page 258, including any comments on the first treasure hunt, especially the Academic Universe search! How could Bob and Prof. Aikat make it even better?
Final Research Web Page due at the start of class, 9:45 a.m. Monday, August 3, and I'm looking forward to seeing the results of all your hard work in this very short month!
