Course Objective

To acquaint graduate students with the history of the field in which most of them will be spending their professional careers. The primary goal is to enrich their understanding of the history of mass communication in order to further develop their teaching and research interests. This course further is designed to develop an appreciation of historical research methods and to heighten the students' ability to conduct good historical research on mass communication topics.

The course will operate on several levels, and as with most graduate level courses, its success will depend greatly upon the participation of the students enrolled. Primarily, it will be a reading and discussion course with one major written assignment.
