Medieval Studies Events Calendar

This calendar seeks to represent all upcoming medieval-related activities at UNC and in the surrounding area, including those organized through the Medieval Studies Program, CAMS, Duke's Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, individual university departments, and others.

In anticipation of the proposed combined Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS) Curriculum here at UNC we have also begun including early-modern-related activities that might be of relevance.

To see events at going on at Duke please visit Duke's calendar website.

The calendar is continually updated as new information becomes available. Notice of upcoming medieval events can be submitted to medieval.events@unc.edu. Events are purged at the beginning of each month. To view past events, see the Calendar Archive.

Medieval Film Series: Beowulf & Grendl (2005)

Filmed entirely in director Sturla Gunnarsson's native Iceland, this 2005 retooling of the famous Anglo-Saxon epic poem lends both a distinctly Scandinavian flavor to the story, while utilizing the island's haunting and breathtaking scenery to provide an otherworldly flare. Hopefully this rather minimalist version of the legend will provide an interesting contrast with Robert Zemeckis's big-budget, Hollywood rendition staring Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, and Anthony Hopkins due out on November 16.
