The Undergraduate Minor in Medieval Studies

The undergraduate minor in Medieval Studies provides students with a broad, humanities-based approach to the rich and fascinating cultures that flourished from 500 to 1500 in Europe, the Near East, and Russia. This challenging minor cuts across departments and disciplines, and it encourages students to discover connections among diverse aspects of medieval culture. Faculty in fourteen departments offer over fifty-five Medieval Studies courses, ranging from "The Origins of Medicine" to "Courtship and Courtliness." The minor enables students to formulate their own interdisciplinary curriculum of five courses; these should form a coherent group, in accordance with a student's interests.

The selection of one core course gives structure to the minor. The following are suggested core courses: Medieval Art (ART 35), Medieval History (HIST 15), Cathedral and Castle (HIST 54), and English Literature of the Middle Ages (ENGL 51). Students should choose a core course to establish a concentration in one major topic in Medieval Studies: art, history, literature, or architecture (HIST 54 presents the essence of Western medieval architecture). Building around the core course, one additional course should be taken in the same department; then, the student should take three more courses distributed between two additional departments. At least one of the five courses should be at the 100-level. Courses in a student's major department may not be counted toward the minor. Study abroad is strongly encouraged.
