The
First NCSSSMST Sloan Summer Student Program was hosted by the North Carolina
School of Science and Mathematics from July 7-15, 2003. This program was
designed for eighth graders who were ready for science and math action.
There were a total of 20 participants from four states attending the program
(5/6 students representating each service region of the participating
schools). Students attended representating the service areas
of:
-
Central Virginia Governor's School for Science and
Technology with Lynchburg City Schools
-
South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics
-
The Center for Advanced Studies/Wheeler High School
in Georgia
-
North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network
Pre-College Program
Teachers and staff working with the program came from the consortium
schools, local middle schools, and from the closest Historically Black
Colleges and Universities.
Rita Fuller, Associate Director of NC-MSEN Pre-College Program, and
a designated teacher/counselor sponsor from each of the participating
consortium schools were responsible for selecting and inviting the students
to attend.

| Major Components of the Program: |
|
- Academic
Curriculum:
A special curriculum using robotics/physics/chemistry/biology research/project
models was used to provide in-depth hands on activities. There also
was a session on using biotechnology to help solve societal issues.
Ethics and leadership, time management and study skills, were a major
component of the program. Please click to see the detail agenda.
|
|
|
- Trips:
There were trips to local universities (University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, Duke University, North Carolina State University, North
Carolina Central University). Students had a chance to visit laboratories,
meet with professors, tour campuses and research facilities. In addition,
they visited the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center and viewed
the night sky from the Planetarium Observatory.
Each campus visit had a slightly different focus ranging from actual
scientific research, to talking to current college students about college
life, to visiting a "virtual reality" laboratory. The purpose
of the campus visit was to generate excitement about attending college
and pursuing the study of science in the future.
|
|
- Other Activities:
Activities for the evenings and weekend included a plan for exercise,
nutrition and sleep for the students during their time at NCSSM. Other
activities available included bowling, a trip to South Point Mall, and
to the movies. The physical activities center was also opened for the
students.
