PRE-COLLEGE
PROGRAM FOR HIGH ACHIEVERS
Science makes her Saturdays special days
UNCC program helps student prepare for college, make friends
STEVE LYTTLE
slyttle@charlotteobserver.com
Harding University
High School student Jasmine Gregory says giving up most of her Saturdays
during the school year to attend a special science
program at UNC Charlotte is worth the effort.
"It's
given me a head start," Jasmine says of the pre-college science
program, offered by UNCC to high-achieving students. "It'll be
a big help when
I get to college."
It also provided
Jasmine with one of the biggest moments of her life last summer -- a
chance to make a science presentation before fellow students
from around the world.
It all started
last spring, when Jasmine took first place at the International Science
and Engineering Fair in Indianapolis. The prize was a trip to the
Youth Science Forum last July in London.
There, she
and other winners from around the world spent two weeks visiting tourist
sites. But most of their time, they presented science project
findings to fellow students.
"It wasn't
really scary," Jasmine says. "The students really made me
feel comfortable."
Even language
wasn't a barrier, she says.
"A lot
of students from other countries knew enough English to communicate,"
she says.
The story goes
back several years, when Jasmine was a seventh-grader and was picked
to participate in the UNCC Saturday program. Her mother,
Sonia, a teacher at Druid Hills Elementary School in north Charlotte,
convinced Jasmine that the program would benefit her.
Jasmine attends
three hours of classes, three Saturdays a month. Students in their junior
years are required to conduct a research project.
Jasmine teamed
with UNCC chemistry teacher Thomas Schmedake on an effort to produce
an improved oxygen sensor. That work helped her win
the science fair award a year ago.
"Through
the UNCC program, I've made a lot of friends from other schools,"
says Jasmine, who is enrolled in Harding's International Baccalaureate
program and plans to attend N.C. State University next year. "And
besides, I love science and math. It doesn't seem like work at all."

NC-MSEN
Pre-College Program Student has a major role in The Discovery Channel's
General Genius (Her journey to the Intel
International Science and Engineering Fair 2005) First show:
December 3rd, Saturday at 12:00 e/p
The
North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) is
proud to announce that one of its
Pre-College Program students, Alison Siler, has a major role in The
Discovery Channel's Generation Genius, a documentary
that follows seven remarkable students on their journey to the Intel
International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in 2005.
Generation
Genius: The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
More than 1400 finalists from 45 countries and territories gather in
Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair,
the world's largest high school science and engineering competition.
Millions of dollars in scholarships and prizes are at stake, but only
a select few go
home as winners of this elite competition. "Generation Genius"
follows seven of these remarkable students on their journey to ISEF
and witnesses the
hard work and determination it takes to make it to this prestigious
event.
One of them
is from Charlotte, North Carolina. Alison Siler has spent much of her
time in the past year doing research while looking for a new diet pill.
Alison is an NC-MSEN Pre-College Program student at UNC Charlotte under
the leadership of Victor Mack. During the summer of 2004, she
conducted research as part of the Pre-College Research Experiences Program
(PREP), under the mentorship of Dr. Yvette Huet-Hudson,
UNC Charlotte Biology Department. Alison presented her findings in March
2005 at the NC Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, which was
hosted by the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network
and co-sponsored by the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Alison Siler's
project title was "Effects of 2-Hydroxy Estrone Eicosonate on Weight
Gain."
Over the course
of one week, "Generation Genius" follows these finalists as
they travel from their home states to Phoenix, Arizona, and navigate
the
Intel ISEF competition. As judgment day nears, their nerves are tested.
They worry not only about their peers and the judges, but also about
college
scouts and corporate recruiters. For these students, future careers
can be determined right there. The pressure to impress is high and at
the end of
their journey, we'll find out if one of the chosen few has what it takes
to take home the grand prize or go home with the hope of winning next
year's
competition.
Please put the below dates
on your calendar as we applaud the efforts of Alison Siler and
the NC-MSEN Pre-College Program!
