Faculty Fellows
The mentoring component of MURAP gives the program its unique character. Approximately ten faculty mentors who are based at UNC-Chapel Hill work in MURAP each summer. They represent fields such as anthropology, economics, English, history, fine arts, political science, romance languages, sociology, and women’s studies. Faculty fellows carry out two major roles: they each direct two students in an independent research project from conception to completion in oral and written forms, and they also work on the development of their own research projects. They have exceptional skills in advising and mentoring students and have outstanding records in publishing scholarly books and articles. Several have received awards for their scholarship and teaching, reflecting the high caliber of the faculty devoting their summer to serve as mentors.
Students admitted to the program are expected to meet with their faculty mentor at least three times each week to develop their research agenda. Special efforts are made to match students and faculty mentors who share similar interests. Both faculty and students have found programmatic value in the mutual research support they provide one another. As an example, beyond their participation in the program, students tend to seek their mentor’s feedback on research and applying to graduate school. Occasionally, the ten-week program has yielded a collaborative research product of publishable quality between student and mentor.
