Application Checklist

Use this checklist to keep track of your progress as you get your student ready to submit their application for IRB review.  Regarding the review process, you should allow a couple of weeks and up to a month in some cases, for review of your application and notice to be sent back to you.  It is best to check with the Office of Human Research Ethics about expected time-frames.

  • Meet with your student to discuss their project and research plans
  • Discuss the IRB.  Does the student's research require approval?

Review the IRB Informational websites from Office of Human Research Ethics
NOTE:  If there is any question at all about what type of research needs approval contact the IRB!
  • Submit the proper paperwork regarding the ethics course to the appropriate person.

Paper Work = Certificate from Training Course
  • Check with your student to make sure he or she has also completed the ethics course and submitted paperwork.

NOTE: It might be a good idea to take the ethics course together with your student, this way you can ensure both of you have met the requirement and submitted the paperwork.
  • Determine which IRB covers your department and ensure the student obtains the correct application materials. Review the IRB's website for detailed instructions.
  • Check with your student and ask if they have any questions about the application
  • Review the completed application before it is submitted to the IRB
  • Sign the completed application
  • Make sure the student submits the application to the correct IRB
  • Wait for a response from the IRB
  • Once the project has been approved - THE STUDENT IS READY TO DO RESEARCH!!
