For Faculty: Research Involving Human Subjects
Your Responsibilities
As a faculty advisor to a student conducting human subject research, you have several responsibilities regarding IRB. As an advisor you are accepting full responsibility for the work, both conceptually and ethically. If you have a student that wants to do research involving human subjects, you should keep the following things in mind.
- If you are unfamiliar with the IRB, check out the OHRE website so you can help your student if he or she has questions.
- Mention the IRB to the student if he or she hasn’t already brought it up. Check with your department or the IRB about what is necessary for IRB approval and the types of research that require an application and approval.
- Be aware of the students’ responsibilities (Student Responsibilities) and work with them as they complete the application process.
- Make sure you have completed the required forms and ethics training for conducting human research. This could hold up the approval process for the student.
- Review your student's application and SIGN the application before it is submitted.
