Where will your curiosity lead you? We in the OUR are eager to provide the information and resources that you need to engage in original inquiry, scholarship and creative work while you are an undergraduate at Carolina. The way YOU will choose to get started in undergraduate research is up to you—there are many “right answers”. Here are some ideas, arranged by year, together with some links to other pages on this site.

Incoming students:

• Attend the Undergraduate Research session at CTOPS

First year students:

• Enroll in a First Year Seminar that offers a research experience

Sophomores:

• Attend the “Sophomore Reorientation” workshop sponsored by Student Government

All students:

• Enroll in SPCL 390, Modes of Inquiry to learn about faculty research in many disciplines
• Choose courses that teach research methodologies and/or include research experiences
• Choose a work-study job, or job advertised in the DTH that might lead to a research experience
• Review current postings on the OUR Database of Research Opportunities
• Talk with faculty in your courses about their research interests
• Ask graduate student teaching assistants (GTAs) and graduate student research consultants (GRCs) about their research interests, and about other research on campus
• Request assistance from University librarians concerning Carolina faculty research expertise, publications and performances, and review the websites of faculty whose work interests you
• Find out what students with interests similar to yours have accomplished by looking at their research summaries and abstracts of work they have presented at the Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research symposium, and plan to attend the next Symposium (held on the last Friday afternoon of the spring semester)
• If you are interested in international research experiences, review what students have done by using the OUR map of the world.
• Obtain course credit for your research
• Apply for a research fellowship
• Apply for funding to support your research
