How do Cells Communicate and How can Scientists use this Information?
Welcome to Sean Crosson's HHMI online biology learning module! Through the use of this online interactive learning module, you will gain a greater understanding of how cells and biological systems operate. You will also have a better idea of what type of work a scientist does in order to investigate new questions. Specifically this module will focus on the importance of cell to cell signaling. Cellular signaling is so important that without cell signaling, we would not be able to have functioning multicellular organisms. In fact, cells not being able to signal one another, is analogous to humans not being able to communicate with one another. Humans functioning in a society would be impossible, just as cells functioning in a multicellular organism would be impossible. Also just as humans can communicate too much or experience miscommunications, so can cells. When communication issues arise in cells though, they can cause disease, death, or sometimes have little to no effect. Hopefully by the end of this module you will have a better understanding and appreciation for cellular signaling and its complexities. Enjoy!
