Finalists for the HHMI-FSC program will be invited for an interview. All applicants will be notified of the selection committee's decision by April 1, 2012.
Anticipated Number and Amount of Awards:
We expect to make 12 HHMI-FSC awards and 8 HHMI-FT awards of $5,000 each. Selected students will
receive $4,000 at the start of the summer, and the remainder of the award after they have submitted the required final
Graduate student co-mentors should also apply for an associated Graduate Mentor Award once they have a student assigned to them. Graduate student co-mentors will receive $500 per summer up to a total of $1,000 for all HHMI Learning Community mentoring activities. Postdocs are not eligible to receive the stipend. We encourage postdocs to apply for the Postdoctoral Scholar Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduates.
During the summer, the students will attend scheduled group meetings to discuss their research progress. At the end of the summer, each student will present their work. In addition, each student must prepare an abbreviated PowerPoint presentation for display in the OUR database of summer projects.
Each HHMI-FT intern will create a learning module designed to provide self-study opportunities to advanced high school students and curriculum support to high school teachers. These modules should include the HHMI UNC-Chapel Hill co-brand which can be obtained from Ginnie Hench (email@example.com). The modules should acknowledge support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through the Precollege Undergraduate Science Education program.
Participants will be invited to discuss their results at the Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research. Students should also acknowledge support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Precollege and Undergraduate Science Education Program in any publications or presentations resulting from the project.
