For Students: Research Involving Human Subjects
Your Responsibilities
As a student doing research involving human subjects, you have several responsibilities to ensure that you are conducting that research in an appropriate manner and in concordance with ethical human research practices. You should begin thinking about IRB at the same time you are discussing your research plans with a faculty member.
- Begin discussing your research with an appropriate faculty advisor. Ask about the IRB at the onset!!
- Contact your department and ask about IRB procedures and ask if they have examples of completed applications. Check out the OHRE website.
- Ensure that your faculty advisor is aware of the IRB and his/her responsibilities (Faculty Responsibilities). Continuously get your advisor's input during the IRB application process.
- Complete the Application Checklist with your advisor’s input.
- Get advisor's signature (IMPORTANT and NECESSARY) and submit your application to the IRB.
