This category includes the passion play -- which dramatizes significant events in the life of Christ and is based on the text of the Bible -- and the Mormon drama -- which chronicles the founding and early history of the Mormon church based on events described in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon, a scriptural text of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints published in 1830.

THE HILL CUMORAH PAGEANT
Orson Scott Card, playwright; Crawford Gates, composer

Taking its name from the hill in New York state where, according to Mormon doctrine, the Angel Moroni delivered metal plates of the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith, the pageant dramatizes ten stories from the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

MORMON MIRACLE PAGEANT

Staged on the Manti Temple Hill in Utah by a cast of 500, this pageant recounts the struggle faced by Mormons following the publication of the Book of Mormon in 1830, and tells of their 1849 migration from Nauvoo, IL to Utah’s Sanpete County.
